This image from Dan Zarella is an oldie but goodie, and the correlation between high Klout scores and high traffic/high inbound link websites is no surprise. Most Klout standouts are also high profile celebrities and influencers, but as marketing becomes more sophisticated, I’m finding I can engineer influence and as a result, increase social, online, and offline influence more easily than ever before.
At first glance you might call this part of Thomas Friedman’s notion that The World is Flat and new technologies have evened the playing field. In a sense I see his point and still believe he is right, but as the competition for attention online increases, I see a new kind of inequality emerge.
Purely accidental online fame is less frequent (unless it’s attached to a meme like Angelina’s Leg or something of the like) and as it seems to me, the need for online strategy and smart marketers will only increase.
